Would someone be able to build a package up of VLC for OpenSolaris?

This is a great video player and it would be nice to use it on OpenSolaris.

(I know about Mplayer, so please don't tell me to go and use this)

I am requesting this as I believe this would be very useful for the OpenSolaris userbase.

Yes I have seen this and even tried to use it in the past.

It is very old now. There is a newer one of the Dev site, but it never seems to have moved on from there.

I am just surprised nobody from Sun has got onto building a package of it. It is very useful software for viewing video and streamed video. Also it can be used to broadcast and transcode video as well.

I would actually like to use it with some Sun rays if I can ever get an up to date package.

I am pretty reasonable with a compiler myself, but this software has proven difficult to build and I have never managed to find much info on any mailing lists with info on anyone that has ever managed to build an up to date version. (I haven't tried in the last few months, but last time I gave up)

We've looked into providing VLC and some other media players but there seem to be unresolved issues with codec licenses with many of these players. I know there's some effort to resolve this in the upcoming releases and provide better media support but as far as I know we can't just take VLC and put it into our repository due to legal reasons.

I forgot to mention one thing. Please DO NOT install MusicBrainz Picard (LWSpicard) package (if you're trying to install), since I've completely forgotten to include python part... (which means it doesn't work at all)

I'll replace this package tomorrow.

Wow, that's good going kronox, even got skins2 going?

I managed to get it built but had some weird errors with libffmpeg_plugin.so not finding symbols from libavcodec, and it segged whenever i tried to turn on skins2... Which isn't ideal.

Was going to have another play with it this weekend, however now no need!

Thanks! Will try it out later when I slap latest os iso on my box.

Site looks good also :)

I think we are just all too busy...

Kronox has some instructions on his page http://lifewithsolaris.jp/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=2#q5

Unfortunatly the repository seems to be down at the moment.

Cheers
Mika
